26th Annual Cleanup Day Another Great Success

Clean Tahoe’s 26th Annual Community Cleanup Day, aka $5 Dump Day, was held on June 6th 2015 and was another great success, with approximately 595 vehicles coming through the gates of South Tahoe Refuse to dispose of unwanted items at great discounts.

By the time the gates closed at 4:00 pm, we had collected 408,515 pounds of debris for disposal, including old furniture, appliances, outdoor equipment, electronics, green waste, sensitive documents for shredding, and more. We recycled as much material as possible, including 11,275 pounds of electronics, 31,180 pounds of metal, and 1,138 gallons of paper. In addition, 32 refrigerators were decommissioned.

The discounts provided at Cleanup Day provide much-needed financial assistance to local residents who need to dispose of items but might typically be deterred by the cost of disposal in our small mountain community. In addition, by properly disposing of all of these items, we help to deter illegal dumping and maintain the scenic beauty of our environment.

The event was made possible by a generous grant from the Vail Resorts’ EpicPromise Program. Special thanks also goes to our other event sponsors and participants, including South Tahoe Refuse & Recycling, Iron Mountain, the South Tahoe Association of Realtors, California Conservation Corps, No E-Waste, and the Kiwanis Club. Mark your calendars for next year’s event: June 4, 2016!
